Racers offense explodes for 14-2 victory over Diamonds

AKRON, OH --June 8, 2012-- In the bottom of the sixth with two runners on, Akron Racers’ first basemen, Brianna Hesson padded the Racers lead with two RBIs after hitting a home run over the right field fence.

The Racers (1-1) blasted off to win by a score of 14-2, getting revenge against the Diamonds (1-1) for an opening day loss.

The Racers started the game off strong with Sharonda McDonald at first after a walk. Lisa Modglin followed that up by hitting a double, moving McDonald to third. Catcher, Sam Marder was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

With the bases loaded, Nicole Trimboli grounded to second, allowing the Diamonds to flip a double play, tagging Marder and getting Trimboli out at first. McDonald scored the Racers first run of the game on that play.

The Racers remained strong offensively from the second to fourth innings gaining three runs each inning. The innings were highlighted by an RBI double by Modglin (2ndinning), a two-RBI single by McDonald (3rd inning) and a two-RBI single by Marder (4th inning).

Lisa Norris (1-0) took the circle for the Racers tonight, pitching six innings while allowing only five hits, two runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Carolina Diamonds used three pitchers tonight; starting with Danielle Spaulding (0-1) who pitched two innings and was swapped out during the second inning with only one out. Sara Plourde relieved her, pitching another 2.1 innings. The Racers managed 10 runs off the two pitchers.

Lastly Diamonds’ pitcher Sharon Palma stepped into the circle for 2.1 innings of work. Palma allowed seven hits, four runs and one walk.

The Diamonds had a rough night when it came to pitching. Their pitchers walked nine batters and hit three.

Angeline Quiocho and Rachel Folden both hit solo home runs this game, giving the Diamonds two earned runs.
