Akron Racers Draft Pick #1, Rachele Fico, #37, Pitcher, LSU
Rachele Fico and the LSU Tigers fell to The University of Georgia during the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament, 7-0. Fico threw for 7 innings and gave up 10 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned runs, 3 walks, but had 7 strikeouts. Following the loss, Louisiana State’s record fell to 40-14-0 and Fico’s record now stands at 24-11. The Tigers earned the No. 9 seed in the 2013 NCAA Championships and will host Central Connecticut State in the Baton Rouge Regionals Round on Friday, May 17. The Baton Rouge Regionals could feature an Akron Racers match-up as Brianna Cherry and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin Cajuns will also hold a seed in the round.
Akron Racers Draft Pick #8, Ivy Renfroe #20, Pitcher, University of Tennessee
Ivy Renfroe and the No. 4 seeded Lady Vols picked up a 5-0 win this past Thursday against the No. 10 University of South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals but fell to No. 8 University of Missouri 3-0 on Saturday in the SEC Semifinals. Renfroe pitched against Missouri and gave up 8 hits, 3 runs, and a walk, while fanning 8 batters. Following the loss, her record dropped to 17-4. Tennessee picked up the No. 7 seed for the 2013 NCAA Championship and will host Longwood University in the Knoxville Regional Round on Friday, May 17.
Akron Racers Draft Pick #9, Brianna Turang, #2, Outfielder, University of Oklahoma
Brianna Turang and the Sooners won twice against Oklahoma State to capture the 10th Big 12 title in Oklahoma’s school history. In the first game, Oklahoma won 10-1 in five innings after the run-rule was enforced. Turang did her part in the game by reaching third on an error and then scored a run the next play. Turang also made the last out of Senior Day for Oklahoma in the Sooner’s second victory against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Turang had an RBI single and a run scored. Following the capture of the Big 12 title, Oklahoma was named the No. 1 seed for the 2013 NCAA Championship and will face Marist College in the Norman Regional Round on Friday, May 17.
Akron Racers Draft Pick #12, Brianna Cherry, #23, Outfielder, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Brianna Cherry and the Ragin Cajuns had an up and down last week in the Sun Belt Championship. Cherry’s eighth-inning hit to drive in the winning run during the first round matchup against Florida International University last Wednesday helped the Cajuns edge out the Panthers 8-7. Cherry finished the game with 2 runs, a hit, a walk, and an RBI. In the next SBC game against South Alabama, Cherry was quieted as both teams took no hitters into extra innings with South Alabama picking up the 1-0 win in eight innings. The loss also ended Louisiana Lafayette’s win streak at 23. But Cherry bounced back in a big way for the Cajuns the following day. In the first of two games played on Friday, May 10, Louisiana Lafayette pummeled Florida Antlantic University 15-0. Cherry was 2-2 at the plate, had an RBI, and finished the game with a career-high four runs. Later in the day, the Cajuns defeated top-seeded Western Kentucky 3-2 and forced a rematch between the two teams on Saturday, May 11. Cherry was held hitless, but was still able to drive in a run when she came up with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning. However, the Ragin Cajuns were eliminated from the Sun Belt Championship in the rematch against WKU, losing 7-4. Cherry finished the day with 2 hits and an RBI. Louisiana Lafayette will now head to Baton Rouge for the Regional Round of the 2013 NCAA Championship. They will play their first game against Northwestern State University on Saturday, May 17. The Baton Rouge Regionals could feature an Akron Racers match-up as Rachele Fico and the LSU Tigers will be hosting the round in Baton Rouge.
Akron Racers Draft Pick #16, Tess Sito, #33, Second Base/Pitcher, University of Georgia
Tess Sito and the Georgia Bulldogs fell 9-5 against the University of Florida in the SEC Semifinals on Saturday, May 11. Sito broke up a no-hitter in the 5th inning and finished the game with a hit and a walk. The Bulldogs will now face San Diego State on Saturday, May 17 in the Tempe Regional Round of the 2013 NCAA Championship.
Akron Racers Draft Pick #17, Brigette Del Ponte, #4, Third Base/Shortstop, University of Arizona
Brigette Del Ponte and the Arizona Wildcats began a three-game series against the Stanford Cardinals, on Thursday May 9th to finish out the season. The Wildcats won the first game 5-3 and Del Ponte ended the game with a hit and an error. Arizona was shut-out by the Cardinals in their next game and the Wildcats lost 2-0 but Del Ponte registered a hit during the game. In the final game of the season for the Wildcats, Del Ponte was hitless but earned 3 walks in the 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Arizona will play Baylor in the College Station Regionals of the 2013 NCAA Championship on May 17.
