Racers Lose 6th in a Row; Bandits Complete Sweep with 5-0 Win

AKRON, OH – August 11, 2013 – On Sunday afternoon, August 11, fans in Firestone Stadium found themselves treated to another epic fastpitch faceoff when Ivy Renfroe of the Akron Racers and Monica Abbott of the Chicago Bandits faced each other in a rematch of Friday night’s game. Abbott and the Bandits once again came out on top, beating Renfroe and the Racers 5-0. With the win, the Bandits completed their third sweep of the Racers this season.

The Racers had a chance to get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, when Taylor Schlopy kickstarted the offense with a leadoff double. Two outs later, Schlopy stood at third as Kaylyn Castillo walked to put runners at the corners for slugger Sam Marder. Marder flew out to center field to end the inning, the first of five long fly ball outs the Racers would have over the course of the afternoon. Akron also left seven total runners on base in the game.

Chicago once again got on the board first the next inning, scoring one run a sacrifice fly by catcher Kazuki Watanabe. The inning ended on the same play, however, when Kimi Pohlman got caught in a pickle between second and third, and the Racers tagged her for the inning’s final out.

The Bandits got on the board again in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on a hit and two Racers errors. Renfroe departed with one on and two out, and Jen Mineau entered the game, which she would later finish for the Racers. Renfroe pitched 5.1 innings, giving up just three runs and one earned run while striking out two and walking three. The Bandits added another pair of runs off of Mineau in the top of the seventh inning on Tammy Williams’ towering home run over the right field fence.

Despite considerable improvement over the course of the season, Akron’s defensive inconsistencies showed in the game as the team committed four errors that led to two unearned runs for Renfroe. But even with the errors, the Racers also made several spectacular plays, most notably by the left side of the infield. Kelley Montalvo had several at third base, including a great grab of Nerissa Myers’ line drive in the top of the third inning and a smooth scoop of Myers’ grounder in the top of the seventh, while Brigette Del Ponte made a daring diving catch of Alisa Goler’s foul pop to end the top of the fifth inning.

The Racers return to action next weekend for their final homestand of the season. They are scheduled to face the NY/NJ Comets in a four-game series from Thursday, August 15 to Sunday, August 18. The series is dedicated to raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Tickets are still available for all four games and can be purchased online at www.akronracers.org or by calling the ticket office at (330) 376-8188.
