FORMER LSU SPEEDSTER, AJ ANDREWS COMMITS TO AKRON THROUGH 2017

FORMER LSU SPEEDSTER, AJ ANDREWS COMMITS TO AKRON THROUGH 2017

AKRON, OH – The Akron Racers have completed a two-year contractual agreement with former LSU speedster, A.J. Andrews. Andrews was acquired in a strategic trade sending, shortstop Jill Barrett to the Chicago Bandits to obtain the fourth overall selection in the 2016 NPF Senior Draft. The trade gives Akron back-to-back selections, (#3 & #4), in the upcoming April 11th draft. The Racers also grabbed the 31st overall pick in the three-for-one exchange.

“Andrews was the pivotal player in this trade,” explains the Racers GM, Joey Arrietta. “AJ is loaded with talent. Her speed, quickness and bat-handling skill reminds me of former Racers’ outfielder, Sharonda McDonald. To me, she is the perfect addition.”

Andrews’ aptitude for stealing bases (7 for 9) and her eight runs scored are a welcomed addition to arguably the best offense unit in the NPF in 2015. The Racers led the league in runs scored (188), RBI (175), home runs (49) and on-base percentage (.342).  The Racers finished first in nine offensive categories and second in two additional major offensive categories in a league loaded with the best offensive players in the world.

During her career at LSU, Andrews earned second-team All-SEC honors twice, First-Team All-SEC once and All-SEC Freshman team honors.  As a senior, Andrews set the single-season school record with 47 walks.  Her four-year career included, 240 games played, recording 237 hits, scoring 179 runs, while batting .321 and stealing 97 bases in 105 attempts against some of the top competition in the country in the SEC.  Andrews, defensively, covers a lot ground using her speed, once again, to nail down a .959 fielding percentage.

As a rookie, Andrews appeared in 31 games last season for Chicago with 19 starts and drew five walks in just 55 plate appearances working primarily as a right fielder and pinch runner.
