AKRON, OH – Akron Racers third baseman Kelley Montalvo will lead the cast of special guests at the world premiere of Think Media Studios’ feature-length documentary “Burn the Ships” at the 41st Cleveland International Film Festival. “Burn the Ships” is directed and produced by Think Media Studios’ Julia Thorndike and Danielle Miller and will debut Friday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Akron-Summit County Public Library. The film will also be shown as a part of the festival in Cleveland at Tower City Cinemas on Sunday, April 2 at 11:10 a.m. and Monday, April 3 at 4:15 p.m.
“Burn the Ships” follows the 2015 Akron Racers while also shining a light on the trials and tribulations that women’s professional softball has faced over the years and how the Racers have overcome these challenges. Montalvo, the 2012 NPF co-Defensive Player of the Year, is one of many players from the 2015 team who features prominently in the film.
“In the beginning, it was very overwhelming to have somebody watching you 24/7,” Montalvo said about the film-making process. “I wanted to be me in the rawest possible form. I wanted people to see the passion we all have for the game we love.”
Montalvo, who has been named to the All-NPF Team each of the past three seasons, will attend the Akron premiere and the showing in Cleveland on Sunday, April 2. That will give fans of the stellar third baseman two unique opportunities to meet Montalvo.
“Honestly, I really, really hope people can see the heart and soul of the sport we love,” Montalvo said. “I want them to feel the passion we have to keep playing despite the challenges.
“I want to get the word out that we are here and for people to see everything we go through.”
Also among the special attendees at the Akron premiere will be Racer mascot and Akron’s favorite cheetah, Wheelie.
Akron Racers General Manager Joey Arrietta, Miller and Thorndike will be appearing on WKYC Channel 3 News Monday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. and 11 p.m. to promote the film’s appearances in the film festival. They will be appearing with WKYC sports director Jim Donovan.
Those in attendance at any of those three showings will also receive a voucher for a free ticket to attend a Racers game in Akron during the 2017 season, upon leaving the theatre.
The Racers, who will enter their 16th season this summer, began play in 1999 in the WPSL, and are the oldest existing women’s professional softball team in the country.
