AKRON, OH – The Akron Racers dropped the first game of a two-game series against the Texas Charge on Saturday night, losing by a score of 5-2.
The Charge took a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning when Nadia Taylor drove home Brittany Gomez and Bailey Landry with a two-run single to right field.
Akron answered back in the top of the third inning when catcher Griffin Joiner singled down the right field line and centerfielder A.J. Andrews doubled down the left field line to jump start the inning. Joiner would later score on a wild pitch by Texas starter Dallas Escobedo, but that would be the end of the rally as Escobedo struck out the side in the frame. The Charger hurler ended the night with 11 strikeouts.
Texas answered right back in the bottom of the third inning as by Landry and Taylor hit home runs to put the Charge ahead 5-1.
The Racers would scratch out a run in the top of the fifth inning as Andrews kicked off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Andrews scored on Sami Fagan’s second double of the night, this one to left field to make the score 5-2. Fagan ended the night 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and one RBI to lead Akron’s offense.
A pair of walks in the top of the seventh inning brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Texas pitcher, and former Racer, Brittany Mack-Oakes struck out Shellie Robinson to end the game.
Akron will look to tie the series Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. ET before coming home for the first homestand of the season. The Racers begin the home season against the NPF’s newest team the Beijing Shougang Eagles from China at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21. There will be two showings at the Akron-Summit County Public Library at 6:00 pm and 8:15 pm on Tuesday, June 20.
