AKRON, OH – Akron Racers starting pitcher Jailyn Ford and rookie first baseman Nicole Schroeder each took home an NPF weekly award covering the week of Monday, June 26 through Sunday, July 2, the league announced on Monday. Ford and Schroeder’s contributed to a 4-2 record for the Racers as Akron (12-10) climbed into second place in the standings.
Ford was named the NPF pitcher of the week, making two appearances, including one start. The second-year pitcher out of James Madison earned a win and a save, contributing to two combined shutouts for the Racer pitching staff last week.
On Thursday, June 29, Ford pitched the final inning of Akron’s 3-0 win over the Chicago Bandits in a rain shortened game at Firestone Stadium to earn her first save of the season. Ford was perfect in the inning with one strikeout. On Saturday, July 1, Ford threw five shutout innings in the Racers’ 1-0 victory over the Texas Charge in the second game of a double header. The left-hander scattered two hits and two walks with a strikeout to earn her team-leading third win of the season. Ford held batters to just two hits in 20 at bats in the week.
Schroeder (Arkansas) was named the rookie of the week, after going 5-for-15 at the plate with a double, two home runs and six RBI. Her .800 slugging percentage for the week led all rookies and her six RBI were top for the entire league.
On Tuesday, June 27, Schroeder put the Racers ahead 2-0 with a two-run double in the second inning of the team’s 3-2 win over the Bandits. Schroeder also had an RBI single in Akron’s 3-1 win over the Charge in the team’s first game of a double header on July 1. The next evening, Schroeder hit two home runs and had three RBI in the Racers’ 13-6 loss to the Texas Charge.
After defeating Chicago 12-7 Monday, July 3, Akron will face the Bandits in the final game of the two-game series in Chicago on Tuesday, before returning to Firestone Stadium on Friday, July 7, to face the Bandits in a two-game series over the weekend to kick-off a six day homestand.
