AKRON, OH – For the second week in a row, an Akron Racers player has earned the NPF Player of the Week award. After outfielder Shellie Robinson took home the honors last week (July 3-9), second baseman Ashley Thomas is now being honored for her outstanding performance from July 10-16, the league announced Monday.
Thomas was incredibly impressive this past week, leading the league in hits (9), runs (7), triples (1), total bases (14), and RBI (6) in seven games over the past seven days. Thomas reached base safely in all but one of the seven games that Akron played this week, cumulating nine hits and a walk.
Thomas started off the week strong with a magnificent performance against the Beijing Eagles at home on Tuesday. Ashley went 3-for-4 with home run and three runs scored. Thomas managed maybe an even more impressive performance on Saturday against the Eagles in Florida, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI, and four runs scored. The Racers won both games, and Thomas was named Vaultz Lock It Up Player of the Game in each.
Thomas finished the week strong, carrying a four-game hitting streak and a three-game RBI streak into Akron’s next series. Thomas contributed to 12 unique runs out of the Racers 25 runs scored this week
Like Robinson, Thomas has not only impressed for the week that she earned the award. Thomas has been one of the most consistent offensive performers in the Racers’ lineup all season long. She leads the team with 33 hits, and leads the entire NPF with 23 runs scored.
Thomas has been a staple at the top of the Akron batting order, hitting first or second all year. She has reached base safely in 26 of Akron’s 32 games thus far in 2017. Thomas has started every game for the Racers this season, playing both second base and shortstop, and has played in every game of her career but one.
The Racers will look to stay hot this week, as they head to Texas to take on the Texas Charge and Scrap Yard Dawgs in the final road trip of the season for the Racers. The Racers will return to Firestone Stadium on Tuesday, July 25th to begin a 16-game home stand to finish of the regular season. Included in that home stretch are three exhibition games against the Canadian National Team, as well as series against the USSSA Pride, Beijing Shougang Eagles, Scrap Yard Dawgs, and Texas Charge. Throughout the latter stages of the regular season, Akron will look to lock up a top four spot in the final standings, and a trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a chance at the Cowles Cup at the 2017 NPF Championship Series.
You won’t want to miss Thomas and the rest of the Racers as they round out their regular season play here in Akron at Firestone Stadium. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the team website at www.akronracers.org
