Akron Racers Foundation continues to develop and conduct fastpitch events at all levels
AKRON, Ohio (March 23, 2012) – The Akron Racers Foundation’s comprehensive development and utilization of historic Firestone Stadium has gone far beyond its signature team. In fact the, Racers are an exclamation point to a jam-packed summer schedule. The Foundation has developed local, state, regional and National Championship events for amateur and youth participants since its inception 14 years ago in 1999.
The Racers kick off their home season June 7-10, but before the Racers take the field eight different events will dominate the schedule beginning on April 5. The 2012 fastpitch season begins with the
12-team, JV Jamboree, April 5-7, followed by the 20-team, Ohio Invitational, April 13-15. The highly successful 32-team Spring Showcase is scheduled for April 20-22. The 8-team, Rock n’ Fire Tournament closes out the April tournament schedule, April 27-29.
Teams from around the state of Ohio visit Firestone Stadium, including Niles, Archbishop Hoban, Canfield, Wellington, Minster, Massillon Perry, Toledo Whitmer, Avon Lake, as well as Coventry, Revere, Walsh, Green, Tallmadge, Solon and North Canton Hoover. In all, 72 schools will test their skills in hopes of preparing for the OHSAA Championships at Firestone Stadium in June.
As we step into May, Firestone Stadium will, once again, be the host of the MAC Championship. The MAC makes its ninth visit to Akron, May 9-12. The USCAA Small College National Tournament returns for its third year, May 15-17. The Akron Racers will co-sponsor the 2nd Annual NSA 14u NIT with one of the nation’s leading equipment suppliers, Worth, May 26-28. Worth will reward the top team with two of their select fastpitch bats. Trophies will be presented to the Top Hitter and the Top Pitcher in the three-day event.
The OHSAA Girl’s Softball Tournament returns to Firestone Stadium for their fourth year, May 31-June 2. The highly successful 54-team Slam Series I (10u, 12u & 14u) will take place during the Racers Opening Weekend, June 8-10. The annual 30-team Slam Series II (Bill Homa Memorial) 16u & 18u NSA Tournament is scheduled for June 15-17.
The amateur schedule heats up in July with the first NSA Summer Sizzler. This event is a “last chance” tourney for area teams hoping to qualify for the NSA National Championship, July in Spartanburg, S.C.
August gets even hotter with the return of the Little League Central Regional. Nine states including Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana will travel to Akron to compete for the chance to represent the region in the 13u National Championship, in Portland, OR.
A new event, the All-American Games, will make their debut, August 9-12. The National Scouting Service has teamed up with the Akron Racers to bring 64 of the top prospects from around the country to be trained by the Racers’ players for two days. The prospects will then be divided up into teams and will compete in front of numerous college coaches and fans in hopes of landing a scholarship opportunity.
