Akron Racers re-sign trio of starting outfielders

AKRON, Ohio – Feb. 13, 2012 – Akron Racers’ GM Joey Arrietta announced today the re-signing of all three starting outfielders to the 2012 roster. Left-fielder Taylor Schlopy, centerfielder Lisa Modglin and right fielder Sharonda McDonald all agreed to terms this week.

Drafted in the first round of the 2011 NPF Rookie Draft, Taylor Schlopy wasted no time in making an impact with the Racers organization. Playing mostly in the outfield, she saw action in 39 games and batted .261 for the Racers. She had the third best average on the team and the third most home runs. She also tied for third with 10 RBIs. Schlopy finished second in walks with 15 and tied for first in hit by pitch tallies with three. On the base paths, she stole six bases and was only caught stealing once.

“Schlopy was a great addition to the roster last season and made an immediate impact,” said Arrietta. “Coming from Georgia and entering the league with three of her teammates was something pretty special and all four of the Georgia rookies showed that last season with their performances on the field. We expect Schlopy to improve on last season and become a real offensive force for the Racers organization.”

Centerfielder Lisa Modglin played in 36 games last season as the centerfielder for the Racers. She batted .179 with one double and one triple. Modglin stole four bases on eight attempts. On defense, she committed only one error all season. Arguably her flashiest contribution to the Racers’ defense in 2011 was the robbing of four home runs at the outfield wall from opponents.

“Modglin and McDonald bring a lot of speed and defense to the Racer outfield and on the base paths,” said Arrietta. “We’re looking to turn up the dial a bit this season and apply more pressure to our opponents pitchers, so having speedy players like these two will help that a lot.”

Sharonda McDonald enters her third season with the Akron Racers and her fifth season overall in the NPF. She played in 36 games and hit .247 for the Racers last season. McDonald led the team with 15 runs and went 8-for-10 in stolen base attempts last season. McDonald’s speed is expected to boost the Racers on the base paths as well as defensively in the outfield.

The Akron Racers open the 2012 season on Thursday, June 7, with a regular season opener against the newly formed Carolina Diamonds. Season tickets for the 2012 season are on sale now and can be ordered by calling 330-376-8188.
