Racers take opening day loss, 7-3
Akron, Ohio – Aja Paculba opened her tenure with the Akron Racers Thursday night with a bang, smashing a three-run homerun over the left field fence to close the scoring gap between the Racers (0-1) and Carolina Diamonds (1-0) to 7-3 in the fourth inning.
The Diamonds, behind the arms of Katie Burkhart and Angel Brunner, and some strong offensive fire power went on to defeat the Racers 7-3 on the Opening Day of the 2012 National Pro Fastpitch season.
Kristina Thorson (0-1) took the circle for the Racers as the opening day starter and immediately ran into trouble against the Diamonds. With the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Diamonds short stop Bianca Mejia blasted off, giving the newly formed team an early 4-0 lead.
Thorson was pulled three innings later after giving up five hits, six runs (all earned), three walks and one home run. Thorson struck out three batters. The Diamonds added two runs in the third inning with back-to-back RBIs by Brooke Le Sage and GiOnna DiSalvatore to end Thorson’s night.
Diamonds centerfielder Caitlin Lever smacked a home run to give the Diamonds a seven run lead before the Racers comeback.
The Akron Racers and Carolina Diamonds will play game two of the four game weekend series tomorrow night, June 8. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
